LAY TOPS STRONG POOL CHECKER TOURNEY IN SOUTH BEND; COLEMAN SWEEPS BIG BOARD (see below)

Clorius Lay, Gary, Ind., known as "The Mongoose," took first prize in the 13th Annual South Bend Checker Festival on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, with 32 points. Frequent winner Charles "Pecan" Thompson, Carol Stream, Ill., was second with 29, and fellow Top Masters Eugene "Hamp" Hampton, Indianapolis, and Don Lowe, Detroit, were right behind at 28. Scoring was based on 2 points per win and 1 per draw.

The tournament doubled in size from last year, and seven of the 12 players in Division I held the rank of Top Master in the National tourneys. We welcomed 94-year-old George Robinson and National Director Wayne Lockheart from Toledo, Ohio, and a delegation from Detroit of Lowe, Ed Danzy, and Ed Williams. Robinson had played in South Bend 10 years ago, and the others competed here for the first time.

Chicagoans Ernest "Rome" Lee and Andrew "Twin" Young dominated Division II, tying for first with 27 points each out of a maximum possible 36. Rod Polk and Stoney Burke, both of Chicago, and Willie Coleman, Gary, Ind., tied for third prize with 19 each.

Updated numerical ratings will be announced later. First-time players in South Bend are indicated on the chart with TM for Top Master, JM for Junior Master, and BR for Blue Ribbon in place of ratings.
